Biography

Korean-born violinist Mi-Sa Yang was born and raised in Osaka, Japan. She was admitted to the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris (CNSMDP) in chamber music after completing her advanced studies in the “Concert Violinist” program under Olivier Charlier and Jean-Jacques Kantorow at the same conservatory.

Mi-Sa has won several international competitions: First Prize at the International Yehudi Menuhin Competition for Young Violinists in 2000, Third Prize and Special Jury Prize at the Sendai International Music Competition in 2001, and First Prize in a piano trio (piano, violin, cello) at the 55th Maria Canals International Music Competition in Barcelona in 2009.

Since her orchestral debut at the age of 12 in Japan, she has performed with prestigious ensembles such as Sinfonia Varsovia, Suk Chamber Orchestra, London Mozart Players, Sendai Philharmonic Orchestra, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, New Japan Philharmonic, Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra, Kyoto Symphony Orchestra, Kansai Philharmonic Orchestra, Century Orchestra Osaka, among others. She also performs in recitals at international venues and festivals. Her performances have earned high praise from critics and the press.

Additionally, Mi-Sa Yang has always cultivated a passion for chamber music. She co-founded the Trio Les Esprits with pianist Adam Laloum and cellist Victor Julien-Laferrière, and has been a member of the Quatuor Ardeo since 2014.

She has appeared at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Wiener Konzerthaus, Philharmonie de Paris, Kölner Philharmonie, Théâtre des Champs Élysées, Klavier-Festival Ruhr, Folle Journée in Nantes and Japan, Les Salons en Musique in London, La Roque d’Anthéron, Fêtes Musicales en Touraine, Deauville Easter Festival, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festspiele, Kuhmo Chamber Music in Finland, Musiq’3 Festival in Brussels, and more.

The two recordings by Trio Les Esprits released by Mirare in 2014 and 2017 received critical acclaim. Their next album, devoted to Schubert, was released by Sony Music in January 2019 and includes the Fantasy for Violin and Piano D934. In spring 2019, Mi-Sa Yang released a new album dedicated to Mozart’s sonatas, in duo with pianist Jonas Vitaud (Mirare).

In September 2023, she released a new duo album on Mirare, featuring works by Poulenc, Prokofiev, Stravinsky, and Debussy, with her longtime collaborator, pianist Adam Laloum. Together, they will perform at the Gustave Moreau Museum, Salle Farel in Biel, Switzerland, and Arsonic in Mons, Belgium.

Since 2022, Mi-Sa Yang has taught at the CNSM in Paris as an assistant professor in Olivier Charlier’s violin class.
